The workshop will be held at the magnificent Warren Conference Center & Inn in Ashland, MA.

Dates
  • Submissions due: July 30, 2004 - No Extensions
  • Notification of acceptance: August 20, 2004
  • Camera-ready copy due: August 27, 2004 - No Extensions
  • Workshop: Friday September 10, 2004

Topics
Submissions are invited that describe the theoretical, empirical, and practical issues associated with all Oxygen-related subjects (see http://www.oxygen.lcs.mit.edu for a description of Oxygen). Oxygen is "human-centric, pervasive computing"; so, any computing that is for "the birds" may not fit, but if you know a lot of bird-like humans, go for it.

Suggested paper topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Architecture: Flexible microprocessors; handhelds; energy efficient architectures; sensors; system integration.
  • Compilation: Streams; distributed computation; software radio.
  • Natural User Interface: High resolution, realistic output; Systems and devices; Speech, vision, and gesture recognition; intentionality expression; customization; collaboration issues.
  • Networking: Protocols; hardware; robustness.
  • Operating systems: Global data access; Hand-held OS; Publish & Subscribe.
  • Security and Privacy: Authentication; control of personal profile information; privacy vs. functionality tradeoffs; robustness.
  • Software Infrastructure: Computational models; Support libraries; protocols; hardware abstractions; development and verification tools.
  • Computer Theory: Efficient algorithms for purposes such as embedded, hand-held and human-centric device; Theory having practical uses.
  • User Recognition and Modeling: Identification, tracking, and course prediction of people; behavior classification; intentionality modeling.
  • Novel Applications.
Demonstration of working prototype systems is encouraged where possible, but all such submissions should be accompanied by a full paper describing the work and its innovative contributions. Previously unpublished work is strongly preferred, but work that has appeared elsewhere may be acceptable if it expresses novel, Oxygen-related aspects. Both basic and applied research papers are solicited, as well as papers describing applications making significant Oxygen contributions.

Format
The conference will be a one day meeting, with a single track of paper presentations and demonstration of working system prototypes. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings. A subset of these papers, i.e., those of the highest-quality, will be selected for presentation at the workshop. Conference attendance includes admission to the conference banquet and evening activities.

Submissions
Authors should submit a two-page extended abstract using the same format and length as will be required for the final proceedings version. Detailed instructions, as well as LaTeX templates can be found here: These specify two-column style, Times Roman font with 10 point type, vertical spacing of 11 points, overall text width of 6.75 inches, length of 9.0 inches, 0.25 inches between the two columns, top margin of 1.0 inch, and left margin of 0.75 inch, on US letter paper. Papers are expected to be at least 1 page but must not exceed 2 pages, including figures and references. Over-length and boring papers may be rejected due to reviewer drowsiness.

1) Submissions must be printable PDF files, sent as MIME-encoded attachments by email to sow2004@csail.mit.edu.

2) The email subject line *must* include the following words, exactly as shown:
"SOW 2004 SUBMISSION"
The following subject line is acceptable: "Subject: SOW 2004 SUBMISSION from Ben Bitdiddle"
The following is not: "Subject: oxygen workshop submission"

3) The body of the email must include a list of topic areas (from the TOPICS section) to which your submission is relevant. These topics will be used to assign reviewers to your submission.

4) In the body of the email, you should also specify whether you will be able to attend the conference to present your work.

Awards
Students with the best paper and presentation will receive an award. Everyone else will be given a small dose of 02 gas.
